Patagonia was started by Yvon Chouinard in 1973. As a proficient mountain climber he was in search of the best gear possible and originally formed Chouinard Equipment. Yvon discovered that Rugby shirts from Scotland were functionally better for climbing, since the collar protected his neck from the rope and he soon started to make specific clothing for climbing. Patagonia was born.
His philosophy for Patagonia and the culture of the company has not changed since day one. Their mission statement is one of the finest and simplest messages of any brand out there. And one that Patagonia sticks to at all costs. "Build the best product, cause no unnecessary harm, use business to inspire and implement solutions to the environmental crisis".
Through this mantra, Patagonia tells an honest and open story about the need to protect the planet and all its inhabitants. They practice what they preach through the 1% for the Planet campaign, of which Yvon Chouinard was a founding member. Patagonia donates 1% of all sales to hundreds of environmental groups globally who's work better protects the earth's environmental health. Patagonia also urges its customers to recycle their product, even fixing if for free under the Worn Wear program.
Purchasing a Patagonia product helps push both their contribution to global sustainability as well as spreading the vital message that environmental and social responsibility is everyone’s business.
