Stüssy is one of the archetypical streetwear brands to ever emerge. Started by Shawn Stüssy in the early 1980s, he used to make his own surfboards and simply started to scrawl his name on the top of the board. His signature Stüssy logo soon found its way to a tee shirt and cap and from here Stussy was born.
It was quickly picked up by surfers and skateboarders across California and then took to subcultures of punk and hip-hop that were emerging around the late 80s and early 90s in both Los Angeles and New York City. This is where the term streetwear was also born.
It became further defined in early 90s New York City when the Stussy store sat alongside the Union store, both championing what was to become modern day streetwear. The Union store was opened by a previous Stussy store worker named James Jebbia, who went on to open a similar store but stocking far more skateboard product, he called this new store Supreme. The rest, as they say, is history.
