Welcoming Labor, NYC's Finest Skate Shop

If you’ve paid a visit to New York City over the past years there’s a good chance you’ll have found yourself lurking at Labor Skate Shop. Labor is conveniently situated on Canal Street, by the brilliant LES Skatepark and a twenty-minute push from the hallowed tarmac courts of Tompkins Square Park, better known within the Quartersnacks' world as the T.F.

Labor opened it’s doors almost a decade ago in 2012. Owner, James Rewolinski, has been doing things the right way since day one. Before finalising a location for his store, James made the point of speaking to other skate store owners in the city, confident that his vision for Labor would bring something different, but respectful enough to not want to upset anyone.

Labor has an excellent reputation for its selection and curation of brands, whether this be New York based outfits such as Call Me 917, Bronze 56K and Hopps, to U.K brands including Isle, Skateboard Cafe and Palace Skateboards. The shop's own merchandise kills it too with Labor selling a ton of it.

This basic level of respect and understanding of the unwritten rules of skateboarding has seen Labor become one of the most recognised and respected shops in the US. So much so that the store received a feature recently on the ID website, local skateboarders - including Frog’s Coles Bailey and Kyota Umeki - speak glowingly of James and his staffs’ knowledge, positive attitude and mentorship.

For the past few years James has been looking to open a second Labor location in Brooklyn. Eventually finding the right space in an upcoming part of Bushwick, which opened just last month. Unlike the small and crowded Canal St store, Bushwick will bring the opportunity to hold events in-store and out on the street. Something which, unfortunately, gentrification has made difficult in Manhattan.

Labor is skateboarding through and through and we’re as proud to welcome the store to Parade as we're looking forward to seeing what the future brings for James and his team.

The Skateboard Story have an interesting interview with James on their site covering the new Bushwick location, supporting your local skate store and online sales. You can also check out the Labor skate team as they hit various New York City landmarks in the Venture x Labor clip.
